Cupra Born spied testing with more power
Cupra’s all-electric family car will soon have more performance in its armoury
Cupra is getting busy refreshing its model range and the latest car to get an upgrade is the Golf-sized, all-electric Cupra Born hatchback.
With the all-new Terramar SUV, Raval supermini and Tavascan SUV coming, plus the facelifted Leon and Formentor models, Cupra is making sure the Born won’t be left by the wayside. While a full mid-life refresh for the Born isn't due until 2025, Cupra will be sharpening the dynamic edge of its entry-level EV with the more powerful version seen in these spy shots.
Cupra only launched the Born in 2021 and it's currently available in V1, V2 and V3 trim levels with two battery sizes - 58kWh and 77kWh (we're still waiting on an entry-level 45kWh version). The base Born gets 201bhp although the V2 and V3 have the option of 227bhp thanks to an e-Boost function that temporarily increases the power output. Auto Express understands that the test car spotted by our spy photographers is an even more potent version.
It's no secret that Volkswagen is developing a sporty GTX variant of the Born's sister model, the ID.3. We've even tried it from the passenger seat in a concept car badged ID.X. It's feasible that the Born could replicate that model's dual-motor set up with the 77kWh battery, although the 328bhp output of the VW will probably be toned down. With the extra focus on performance, this sportier variant is unlikely to trouble the Cupra Born's current maximum 259-mile range.
